The method
A cellular automaton is the simplest possible urban model: a grid of cells, each deciding its next state only from its neighbours. URBAN CROSS runs these rules in time and stacks the history: every generation of the automaton becomes one level of the pavilion, so the built form is a fossil record of the computation.
The pavilion
The system was applied to the design of the pavilion constructed for the World Urban Forum 13 in Baku, and presented in the talk "Algorithmic Urbanism" at the PMD Pavilion. The generator above runs the same logic: press Reseed and a different pavilion grows from the same rules. That is the argument of algorithmic urbanism in one interaction.
